The Spring Band Legacy

The Spring High School Music Department has been recognized as a 2016 Grammy Signature School by the Grammy Foundation, one of 13 in the country given that designation. The band program has received six invitations to perform at the Midwest clinic since 2008 and nine total invitations making it the most invited program of any in Texas. 

The Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and several chamber ensembles performed as featured ensembles at the 2016 Music For All National Concert Festival in Indianapolis, and they along with The Spring HS Chorale, Varsity Women's Choir, and Jazz Ensemble are all frequent National Winners in the Choice Music Events Mark of Excellence call for tapes. The Spring Band has qualified to the UIL Texas State Marching Contest at every opportunity since 1992. In recent years, chamber ensembles have reached the semi-finals of the Fischoff National Chamber Competition and placed as finalists at the Coltman Chamber competition in Austin, Texas. The instrumental music curriculum includes four different levels of concert band with an optional Honors component for members of the Wind Ensemble. Other offerings include AP music theory, applied music, color guard, and winter guard. Students also participate in TMEA All-Region and All-State auditions, solo recitals, chamber music recitals, and occasional performances with the award-winning Spring High School Choir. Spring High School is located in Spring, Texas, an unincorporated suburban community in Harris County, north of Houston. The Spring Independent School District has a diverse population of approximately 39,000 students. Performing arts education has traditionally been an essential component in the curriculum of the Spring ISD.

A comprehensive private lesson program combined with bi-weekly master classes on individual instruments provide students a unique opportunity to learn from instrumental specialists, some of whom perform with Houston Symphony and Houston Ballet Orchestra.

In recent years several Spring Band alumni have been participating in music programs at the University of Houston, the University of Texas, Sam Houston State, Baylor, Texas Christian University, Stephen F. Austin, Texas Tech, Texas A & M, Oklahoma State, and other local universities including Lone Star College and Blinn in Brenham.

​The concert bands are consistent UIL Sweepstakes and "best-in-class" winners at festivals in Texas, Florida, and Washington, DC. Since 1990, Spring has placed in the top 5 of the TMEA Honor Band competition (held every other year) on seven different occasions under four different directors. Previous Midwest Clinic performances occurred in 2016, 2008, 1999, 1994, 1980, and Percussion Ensemble in 2009 and 2023. The Jazz Ensemble traveled to Midwest Clinic in Chicago in December 2010, and the Spring Band's "Enigma" Saxophone Quartet was invited to perform in 2013. The band also performed at the 2005 BOA National Concert Band Festival under the direction of Mark Edenfield. The band received the prestigious Sudler Flag of Honor in 1994 from the John Philip Sousa Foundation. The marching band has been a participant in the UIL State Marching Contest in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and a UIL Area F Finalist in every opportunity. The band has also been a finalist multiple times at the BOA Houston Regional and the BOA San Antonio Super Regional. The marching band was UIL State Champion (at the time, a contest held in even-number years) in 1992 and 1994, runner-up in 1998, fourth in 2000, and ninth in 2010. They were Bands of America Grand National Champion in 1993.

Who we are: The Spring Band Boosters are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations of band parents whose goal is to support the Spring Band both financially and through involvement with the band program to ensure the quality, safety, and enjoyment of all its members.

What we do: The boosters support the band via fundraising, chaperoning events, and assisting the band staff as needed. Volunteering with the band boosters is a great way to be involved in your child's band experience. It's also an excellent way to make new friends and get to know the other students. The success of the program depends on your commitment!

What you can do: Volunteer!! Attend booster meetings; check the band calendar for more information. Join one of our many committees – there are numerous different opportunities to suit any interest, including chaperoning, fundraising, hospitality, communications, and travel. We have a spot for you, whether it be helping serve food to the students, stitching up uniforms, asking businesses to sponsor the band, driving equipment, or loading and unloading the trailer, or helping to construct props. Finally, have FUN while supporting our fantastic band program!
